A practical route for schools managing pupil devices, staff laptops, classroom computers and mixed accessories.

01

Separate owned and leased equipment

Confirm which devices belong to the school, a trust, a finance provider or a pupil scheme. Leased equipment may have its own return conditions and must not enter the general recycling group.

02

Remove accounts and management controls

Work with the school's IT lead to remove devices from management platforms and activation systems where appropriate. Do not send administrator credentials with the equipment.

03

Treat safeguarding data carefully

Identify devices that may contain pupil records, photographs or staff information. Agree the data-handling route and required evidence before those devices leave controlled custody.

04

Use the holiday window well

Plan access, contacts and collection dates around site closures. Keep a named member of staff available to resolve differences between the asset list and the physical equipment.

05

Consider reuse alongside recycling

Working equipment may suit redeployment, refurbishment or parts recovery. A mixed-condition project should allow different outcomes instead of treating every device as immediate waste.
