A clear pre-handover checklist for personal and business technology.

01

1. Make a simple inventory

List the device type, model where known, approximate age, working condition and whether the charger is available. Organisations should add an internal asset number when one exists.

02

2. Back up what you need

Copy documents, photos and business files you must retain. Verify the backup before deleting anything or handing over the device.

03

3. Sign out and remove accounts

Where practical, sign out of cloud services, remove device locks and disconnect activation features. Do not send passwords or unlock codes through a general web form.

04

4. Explain the data requirement

A personal factory reset and a business data-erasure requirement are not necessarily the same. State the sensitivity of the information and any required evidence before agreeing the service.

05

5. Keep useful accessories together

Chargers, docks and relevant adapters can improve the chance of practical reuse. Match chargers to devices where possible and pack screens, batteries and ports so they are protected during movement.

06

6. Separate damaged batteries

Do not place a swollen, leaking or unusually hot battery into an ordinary box with other equipment. Stop using the device, keep it away from heat and combustible materials, and describe the condition when arranging the handover so suitable instructions can be provided.
